The language Living program was designed by Jason MacDonald in 2012 while working on his MA in Curriculum Development (TESL) at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada. The program is designed to be a fun and interactive method for teaching/learning, using language switching to activate memory cues to aid in the language acquisition process.

The program uses the environment and sustainable living goals as the basis for its learning themes, with a special emphasis on the noble sea turtle as the main character in our English learning journey.
The units taught in the course follow a standard progression of TESL learning and each 10 week course delivers to students a complete “level” of English language proficiency. The 4 core skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening
are delivered in equal measure throughout the Language Living program.
Our Staff
Jason MacDonald began his teaching career as an undergraduate student at Saint Mary’s University in Canada. After graduation Jason received TESL certification in Tohoku, Japan and spent the next 6 years teaching in Akita, Miyagi,
Fukushima, Chiba, Tochigi, and Saitama prefectures.
Jason has taught children and youth in Canada, Japan, Australia, Thailand, Ireland, and now in Okinawa. Jason was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Katsura MacDonald is the graphic designer for the Language Living program for OIST and provides the bilingual component necessary for effective language switching to take place in the classroom. Katsura’s designs are the basis for the course
materials, and the thematic storyline that accompanies the learning units are her original creation.
Katsura was born in Nago City, Okinawa.
Gabriella Moraes Gabriella is an enthusiastic, tri-lingual Language Living instructor who is passionate about spending time in nature, and educating children to develop their language skills while learning about being responsible, environmentally-minded citizens. Gabriella is a graduate of Nagoya University of Foreign Studies where she received her degree in American and British Studies (English). Gabby was born in Maringa, Brazil.
